Mexico with Kids: Top Destinations & Family-Friendly Tips

Author: Dan Brewer

For our family, Mexico is our happy place. With a magical blend of vibrant culture, lush tropical scenery, easygoing beach time, and plenty of adventure, a trip to Mexico with kids makes it an amazing choice for a family holiday. If your family dreams of clambering over jungle-cloaked ruins, snorkeling in clear turquoise water, or tasting authentic local food, you can design a Mexico trip to fit your family’s style.

We love Mexico’s tropical beaches, in fact many of the best family-friendly beach destinations in the world are found here. In addition to fun on the sand, we also lean toward active, outdoorsy travel. We love exploring ruins, hiking mountain trails, and wandering the lively streets of our favorite Mexican towns. You can truly do it all on a family vacation to Mexico.

Planning a Mexico Family Vacation

Good planning sets up a smooth family trip, and Mexico is no different. Thinking through timing, transportation, and where you will stay can turn a good Mexico family vacation into a great one.

When to Visit Mexico with Kids

Mexico is a huge country with many different regions and climates. As such, the “best” time to visit Mexico with kids depends on where you’re going and what you want to do.

Best Time for a Caribbean Coast Beach Vacation in Mexico

Cancun, the Riviera Maya, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres and more…

For Mexico’s Caribbean coast, winter through spring generally offers warm temperatures and comfortable sea conditions that suit long beach days. This is when we typically visit because it lines up with school breaks and feels like a perfect escape from our Canadian winter!

The public Xpu-ha beach is the best beach in Playa del Carmen

Summer brings higher heat and humidity along with a greater chance of seaweed on certain beaches, so it is wise to keep flexible plans and mix beach time with cenotes or eco-parks when needed.

Autumn can be a quieter period with pleasant weather windows, though itineraries should account for the potential of unsettled conditions.

Best Time for a Pacific Coast Beach Vacation in Mexico

Cabo San Lucas, Huatulco, Puerto Escondido, La Paz and more…

On Mexico’s Pacific coast, winter and spring typically deliver sunny weather that favors pool time and coastal walks. Ocean conditions can vary by location, with some stretches experiencing stronger currents, so sheltered coves and resort beaches are often better for younger swimmers. As with the Caribbean side, this is when we like to time our family trips to the Pacific coast.

Late spring into early fall brings warmer air and sea temperatures along with seasonal afternoon showers in southern Pacific regions, which makes morning outings a good strategy while reserving the hottest hours for relaxed downtime.

High Season in Mexico

Crowds swell around Christmas and New Year’s. I love traveling to Mexico over Christmas as the festive energy is wonderful, but popular attractions get busy. We saw this the day after Christmas at the Monte Albán ruins in Oaxaca, and our New Year’s stay at the Barceló Huatulco all-inclusive resort ran at full capacity. Book early if you plan to travel to Mexico with kids over the Christmas season.

How Long to Visit Mexico with Kids

Mexico works for quick getaways and longer adventures. For our family trips to Mexico, we have done the standard 7-day vacations at all-inclusive resorts, 5 days in Mexico City, 2 weeks exploring the Oaxaca Coast beach towns, 12 days in Los Cabos and even an amazing 28-day stay in Playa del Carmen when our kids were small. Long or short, there’s a perfect family trip to Mexico waiting for you.

Getting Around Mexico with Kids

Mexico offers a mix of transportation options, and each comes with trade-offs. We have used several methods in different regions and found each one can work well with a little planning.

Getting Around Mexico By Car

We have rented a car for several of our family trips to Mexico. It’s a bit intimidating at first, but I found I adjusted to the rhythms of the traffic soon enough. A car rental in the Yucatán Peninsula gave us the freedom to visit remote beaches, ruins and cenotes, while in Oaxaca, it made it easy to explore the region thoroughly. For more, read my lessons learned in Driving in the Yucatan Peninsula.

As I discuss in my Cancun Car Rental Advice blog post, mandatory Mexican third-party liability insurance will be added on top of the base quote, which raises the final price (no – your credit card coverage will not work here). I also discus common gas station scams which target tourists.

Getting Around Mexico By Bus, Ferry, and City Transit

We have used Mexican public transportation many times during our family trips, and have always found it easy and enjoyable. For example, the bus from Mexico City to Valle de Bravo was a relaxing way to enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving. Likewise, the public bus from Cabo San Lucas to La Paz was a great way to travel in Mexico without a car.

Meanwhile, in CDMX we used the Metro to reach places like Xochimilco and Teotihuacan. Ferries make island day trips easy, and the ride to Isla Mujeres from Cancun is quick and scenic.

Golf Carts

In some Mexican destinations, like Isla Mujeres, renting a golf cart is a common and super fun way to explore. We rented one during our day trip and visited all corners of the beautiful island. And, as a huge bonus, the kids thought it was the most fun thing ever!

Where to Stay in Mexico with Kids

As you’d expect from a tourism powerhouse like Mexico, there are endless choices for family-friendly accommodations. You can choose from 5-star all-inclusive resorts, hotels, and vacation rentals, and each can be a great fit depending on your plans.

Family-Friendly All-Inclusive Resorts in Mexico

If you ask our kids, there’s no question about where is the best place to stay in Mexico – it’s all-inclusive resorts, all the way! They can’t get enough of the unlimited Mexican food, the awesome water parks and swimming pools, and the fun activities throughout the day.

There are many family-friendly all-inclusive resorts scattered throughout Mexico’s top beach destinations. Our stay at the Riu Palace in Cabo San Lucas stands out as the best family-friendly all-inclusive we have stayed at anywhere. (We liked it so much, we even went back a second time!)

If you plan to visit multiple eco-parks, the Hotel Xcaret Mexico “All-Fun Inclusive” model stands out. Beyond food, your stay includes unlimited admission and transportation to their eco-parks, which can simplify planning and reduce costs.

Hotels

For the times you don’t want the whole all-inclusive experience, smaller family-friendly hotels in Mexico offer a personal touch. When traveling to Mexico, we look for the small luxuries for families, such as rooftop swimming pools, buffet breakfasts, and when possible, separate bedrooms.

In Oaxaca, Suites de la Parra was one of our favorites. The location was amazing, the rooftop pool was perfect for late-day swims, and our suite’s separate bedroom gave everyone space. Staff even brought our made-to-order breakfast to the room each morning!

Vacation Rentals

For longer trips to Mexico with kids, we often prefer the home comforts of a condo or apartment. When traveling with kids, you simply can’t beat having access to your own kitchen, laundry facilities and separate bedrooms.

Many vacation rentals in Mexico are located in top beach destinations, in great condo complexes that offer kid-friendly amenities such as swimming pools, playgrounds, beachfront property and more!

It’s easier than you think to self-cater in Mexico. They have huge supermarkets and it’s easy to find good, healthy food for your family to cook in your vacation rental. Be sure to read my Mexico food safety tips first!

One note, you can usually count on tourist hotels to be in safe neighborhoods. It’s not always as clear when renting a condo in Mexico. Take a few extra moments to confirm that your vacation rental is in a safe, tourist-friendly neighborhood before booking.

Best Things to Do in Mexico with Kids

Mexico’s regions are full of family-friendly adventures. From the Mayan world of the Yucatán to the cultural heart of Oaxaca, you will find something for every interest. The ideas we give below for the best things to do in Mexico with kids come straight from our own family travels.

Exploring the Yucatán Peninsula’s Mayan Riviera

We have visited many exceptional beaches on our travels, and can confidently say that the Mayan Riviera is one of the best beach destinations in the world. The Riviera Maya delivers beautiful white-sand beaches, calm Caribbean water, remarkable ruins, and some of the best eco-parks anywhere.

White Sand Caribbean Beaches

The breathtaking white sand beaches are what draws millions of visitors to the Yucatán Peninsula each year. From the mega-resort of Cancun all the way down to Tulum, and beyond, the coastline of the Riviera Maya is blessed with some of the best beaches in the world.

To find a great beach for your family trip to the Riviera Maya, you can start with the Zona Hotelera in Cancun, which is an endless stretch of white sand beaches. If Cancun isn’t your style, you can find an amazing variety of public beaches around Playa del Carmen, including one with a cenote right in the sand!

Visit Ancient Mayan Ruins

Chichen Itza

The crown jewel of the Yucatán Peninsula, Chichen Itza is a “New Modern Wonder of the World” and is a must see attraction. The main pyramid, El Castillo, is indescribably beautiful and impressive. Arrive as early as you can to sidestep the biggest crowds.

When visiting Chichen Itza arrive early to get good pictures of the El Castillo pyramid

Tulum

The first time I visited the Mayan ruins of Tulum, I couldn’t believe how beautiful the seaside setting was. The Tulum ruins themselves are quite impressive, but with their location perched on cliffs above the Caribbean, the views are unforgettable.

With its amazing seaside location, Tulum is one of the best ruins in mexico
Coba

If your family craves adventure, then you should check out the Coba Mayan ruins. Coba has a deeper jungle feel and a sense of discovery. We hired cycle rickshaws for a one-way ride to the main pyramid to get there ahead of the crowds, and it worked.

Coba is the only one of the best Mayan ruins where you can climb the pyramid - kids can climb too!

Experience World-Class Eco-Parks

The Yucatán Peninsula is not just beaches and ruins… there are plenty of amazing family-friendly eco-parks too! We visited six of the best eco-parks in the Yucatán Peninsula on our trips, but Xcaret and Xel-Ha are the two best eco-parks for families.

Xcaret is the best of them all. With a stunning seaside & jungle location, Xcaret is the perfect mixture of a cultural attraction and a nature theme park. There are many fun things to do at Xcaret with kids, including the chance to swim in an underground river. For more, don’t miss my posts on tips for visiting Xcaret with kids.

Kids will love swimming the lazy river at Xcaret Nature Park

If Xcaret is my favorite eco-park in Mexico, Xel-Ha is a close second. A water-themed park, Xel-Ha is a super fun place to spend a day with kids on a hot day in Mexico. I’ve also got a useful guide to visiting Xel-Ha with kids.

Discover Tropical Islands

We took a ferry ride from Cancun for a fun day trip to Isla Mujeres with kids. As described above, our kids loved exploring the island by golf cart at our own pace. Their favorite stop by far was Tortugranja (the turtle farm), where they got to see baby sea turtles up close.

Cultural Immersion in Oaxaca

Tucked away on Mexico’s Pacific Coast, the region of Oaxaca blends culture, adventure, and history in a way that works beautifully for families.

Explore Oaxaca City

We loved strolling the historic core, especially the pedestrian-only Calle Macedonio Alcalá and the lively Zócalo. The Mercado 20 de Noviembre is a food adventure, with the famous Hall of Smoke for made-to-order grilled meats.

We loved exploring the streets of Oaxaca!

A food tour helped us discover local favorites like tlayudas and Oaxacan chocolate. Our tour guide also helped us discover the fun neighborhoods of Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, which felt like open-air galleries with bright, creative street art.

Hike in the Sierra Norte Mountains

The city of Oaxaca has a beautiful setting in the Sierra Norte Mountains. We couldn’t resist the chance to go hiking in the Pueblos Mancomunados, a network of Zapotec villages. Our family-friendly 7 mile / 11 km hike connected two villages through misty pine forest and big viewpoints.

Discover Ancient Sites

The must-see Monte Albán ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage site and are just outside the city of Oaxaca. The kids loved climbing the large, well-preserved structures and taking in the valley views.

Explore the Oaxaca Coast

Widely known as one of the best surfing spots in the world, it can be a little challenging to find calm, family-friendly beaches on the Oaxaca Coast. But there are lots of good ones, if you know where to look.

Many beachgoers enjoy the safe water at Playa Riconcito along the Oaxacan coast in Mexico.

And, when in Rome… we took advantage of the surf culture here and had an excellent kid-friendly surfing lesson on the legendary Playa Zicatela – a ton of fun! Each of our kids had their own instructor who kept them safely in the smaller surf, while I braved some of the bigger waves offshore.

Adventures in and Around Mexico City (CDMX)

With how much I love Mexico, I’ve always wanted to visit Mexico City, but I was a little intimidated by the idea, especially with kids. The biggest city in the world, Mexico turned out to be a lot of fun to visit with kids, and we were surprised with how family-friendly it felt. We stayed in the main tourist areas and a combination of Uber and the subway made it easy to get around.

Explore Historic and Cultural Sites

A big highlight were the Teotihuacan ruins, a massive archeological complex just outside the city. The highlight for the kids was climbing to the top of the Pyramid of the Sun.

Temple of the Moon - Teotihuacan Pyramids

In the historic center we visited the Zócalo, the Templo Mayor ruins, and the Palacio Nacional to see Diego Rivera’s murals. Our favorite attraction in the city was the Museo de Arte Popular which kept the kids’ attention with colorful, imaginative pieces.

Experience Unique Local Culture

A Xochimilco boat ride was probably the kids’ favorite CDMX activity. Floating mariachi bands, food vendors, and the festive vibe made the hour fly by. Our kids said they wished we had booked five hours instead of one.

Enjoy Urban Green Spaces

An oasis of calm in an otherwise crazy city, we loved visiting the massive park of Bosque de Chapultepec. Highlights were Castillo de Chapultepec (a real castle – in Mexico!) and the fun children’s museum Papalote Museo del Niño.

Venture to Valle de Bravo

The competition is fierce, but Valle de Bravo may be my favorite place to visit with kids in Mexico. Thankfully, visiting Valle de Bravo with kids is an easy side trip from Mexico City.

Of all the amazing things to do in Valle de Bravo with kids, witnessing the monarch butterfly migration at the Piedra Herrada Butterfly Sanctuary was the best. We were surrounded by millions monarch butterflies – an experience none of us will soon forget!

In addition to exploring the charming town discovering amazing food, we also hiked to viewpoints like La Torre and went stand-up paddleboarding on Lake Avandaro.

Adventure and Relaxation in Baja California Sur

All-Inclusive Resort Beach Time in Cabo San Lucas

For a slow-paced beach escape, Cabo San Lucas works well, especially with an all-inclusive. We stayed at the Riu Palace Cabo San Lucas on El Médano Beach and let the days unfold with beach walks and pool time. We enjoyed it here so much, we actually stayed here a second time – something that we never do!!

If you stay at the Riu Palace Cabo with kids, you can enjoy complimentary access to the kids water park at the adjacent Riu Santa Fe resort

The show-stopper was watching humpback whales breaching offshore, visible right from the beach. One important safety note: the undertow around Cabo tends to be strong and red flags are usually up, so ocean swimming is generally not safe.

one of our favorite things to do in Cabo San Lucas with kids was to whale watch from El Medano beach

Family Adventure in La Paz

On our second trip to Baja California Sur, our kids were finally old enough (10 & 12) to join us on a bucket list activity – swimming with whale sharks! One of the most popular places to snorkel with whale sharks in Mexico is La Paz. We saved this amazing family experience for Christmas day and it did not disappoint, it was amazing!

Celine Brewer and her 10-year old son, swim next to a whale shark in La Paz, Mexico.

La Paz is several hours away from Cabo San Lucas, so thankfully there’s lots of other excellent family activities in La Paz. For example, we also went snorkeling with sea lions at Isla Espiritu Santo National Park. We also enjoyed an amazing day of kayaking, snorkeling and hiking at Playa Balandra; one of Mexico’s most stunning beach locations.

Culture in San José del Cabo

We finished up our second trip to Baja California Sur with 3 days in San José del Cabo. Our initial plan was to simply relax and enjoy some beach time, but the weather had other ideas for us. It was cloudy and windy all three days of our stay.

Not to be defeated, we spent our three days in San José del Cabo enjoying the authentic Mexican culture of this historic town. We spent a day exploring, shopping and eating around the historic town center, and the final two days walking for miles on the beautiful beach which seems to go on forever in both directions.

We’ve visited many parts of Mexico with our kids, and we love it so much, it keeps us coming back. Mexico offers wide-ranging experiences for families, from the beaches and ruins of the Riviera Maya to the deep cultural scene in Oaxaca, the history and parks of Mexico City, and the natural beauty around Valle de Bravo. We hope our trips help you plan an amazing family trip to Mexico!
