Our recent trip to Playa del Carmen was our first time in Mexico staying outside of an all-inclusive resort. I was excited about a more authentic trip, but I was worried about the quality of the non-resort beaches. I’m happy to report that this concern was unfounded and we enjoyed our time at many great beaches in the area.
Jam packed with shops and restaurants, Calle Quinta Avenida is a hugely popular main tourist street in Playa del Carmen. I stayed in Playa Del Carmen for a month with my wife and two kids (aged 2 & 4) and we didn’t eat a single meal along this street. I’m sure there are some nice places to eat on this strip, but as a general rule, restaurants in the tourist zones are low quality and high priced, so we found some great alternatives elsewhere.
In the years before we had kids, we travelled extensively through North and South America, Africa and Asia. Are you wondering why we didn’t go to Europe? We intentionally stayed away from Europe as we were saving it for when we had kids. We knew it would be an awesome place to travel with kids, and it turns out we were right! Why is Europe so great for family vacations?
Lucca is known for its city walls that surround the historical city center which is filled with cobblestone streets. It’s typically done as a day trip from Florence, but if you can afford a little more time here it’s worth it. It is also a good base to explore the Tuscan countryside.
We tried to give Pisa a chance, we really did. We searched for enough things to do to make it worthwhile to stay a day or two, but in the end we just couldn’t.
We rented a car at the Cancun airport for our 28 day visit to the Yucatan Peninsula. Here is what we’d like you to know before your trip in hopes it helps you avoid some of the anger and aggravation.
I admit I was very intimidated about the thought of driving a rental car in the Yucatan Peninsula. On previous trips here, I’ve seen the traffic from the comfort of my air-conditioned bus on the way to my fancy all-inclusive and it always looked a bit crazy. But this time, we weren’t going to a resort and we wanted to explore the area, so we needed to rent a car.

When we decided to rent a condo in Playa Del Carmen for a month, my biggest concern was the drinking water. I knew Celine and I could manage to stay healthy, but what about our 2 & 4 year old kids? Surely they’d open their mouths in the bath or eat a bad taco or something? I’m happy to report that with attention to detail and probably a little luck, we managed to spend four full weeks without any sign of tummy troubles. Here’s a little insight on what we did to stay healthy:
